Book Of The Car Aa
(AA)
Having had a clean driving licence for over 20 years I often nostagically look on my book shelves to the text books I bought when driving every day, every month every year to and from work, and to and from social functions.
Each day I walk past West Quay Shopping Precinct I am accosted by a man with an AA sticker who wants to give me a new Book. My book is alas! something of a collector's item.
Those were the days, when everyone pretended to drive on the motorways and got all the Junctions correct, took a break at the AA phone, and phoned back the man from the AA.
Was rescued by the AA, and advised to stopover at Little Chef Restaurant and wait until the fog on the Motorway cleared ... Fortunately, there was plenty of time so I took the advice of the AA literally and had a warming cup of tea ... but when I came out to the carpark, the AA man had gone, and the motorway was still enveloped in a dense gray fog.. All the arrows were pointing to one lane driving, and the lights were orange and flashing.
I got used to the AA system in England, and found it quite reassuring, especially since I used to drive a lot and had my own car ... gosh! how I miss having my own car. I could nip around the corner to Sainsburys or Tescos and drive over to a country village to shop at Waitrese Stores.
The AA became a symbol for my generation and friends would talk about their early employment as Desk Staff working for the AA.
I learnt the highway code in England and when I moved to the United States of America, I went a little bit out of step with the driving system especially in California. It took months before I could steer myself into ... turning right on a RED light!
Still, in Europe I had my own chauffeur, and the driver was my boss. Believe me, I kept my thoughts to myself, and let him take the road to the right or left. I left my massive AA Book on the shelf, and its virtually a family heirloom!
HAPPY TRAVELLING .... excellent stuff!
