Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Young Elizabeth Bennet, grew up in a not very rich but gentry family. Literate and intelligent, aware of her not very privilaged status in the world of English nobility and also of her undoubted personal worth and brilliance, she knows that she is different from the rest of her family, including excentric father, dull mother and immature and childish sisters. She has reserve and distance to everything and everyone.
She is not impressed with the fact, that her neighbours are being visited by a yong, rich and single noble man, Bingley. At first she also doesn't like his friend. Cold and looking as if being bored, althought very rich William Darcy. But then, her sister falls in love with Bingley and Elizabeth herself discovers that something is happening between her and Darcy. But her pride and prejudice after hearing many bad things about him, don't let her believe that he could treat this relationship seriously.
But Darcy doesn't stop thinking about Liz and despite of all of his nobility pride and being prejudiced by the fact of her origin, he decides to ask her to marry him. But while doing this, he can't resist from saying lots of upsetting things about her family what causes her resentment and grief.
With a little "help" from his family's intrigues and unconsciousness of her own family, in the midst of many misunderstandings and make-believes, which make two young people more and more distant from each other, their history seems to be finished.
But when Elizabeth's younger sister decides to runaway from home with a skirt chaser and cheater, which can ruin her life and her family's reputation, Darcy is the one who helps, solving their problems with sense and discretion, still guided by his feeling to Elizabeth.
She discoveres that later, accidentally visiting his estate with her family. There, she discoveres the truth about her would-be husband, a story totally different from the one which she has known. She finally meets him there - their talk seems to be unavoidable. When everything is finally explained they discover that the feeling between them didn't vanish. They decide to get married, getting rid of the redundancy of pride and unnecessary prejudices.
Jane Austen in a remarkable way shows the atmosphere of the age she is writting about. That age, the person of the author herself and the topics she was writting about make "Pride and Prejudice" a classic of feminine literature. However, the story itself keeps this classic on a shelf of soft litareture, not very challenging, perfect for holiday or a long, autumn evening.
