America Alone: The End Of The World As We Know It

In this non-fictional best-seller of 2006, Canadian-born Mark Steyn chooses not to document thoroughly the statistics and incidents he cites but to present colloquially and sometimes humorously his argument that the big danger the world faces is not environmental damage. Instead, he claims that, like Japan and Canada, Europe as his readers have known it is doomed, from Russia to Spain, by birthrates among ethnic Europeans below the replacement rate and much higher birthrates among anti-Western Muslim immigrants and their children, the latter of whom may show traits of Western decadence but often feel more hostile toward the West than their parents do and regard concessions from infidels as signs of weakness. It is on its new Islamic residents, says Steyn, that the parental, multiculturally sensitive governments must depend to provide pensions, health care, and other socialist benefits to an aging ethnically European citizenry that has stayed in a self-indulgent mental childhood, dependent on the United States of America for defense but contemptuous of such American values as self-reliance. Although Steyn dwells much longer on problems than on solutions, he does say that, because Americans must choose among surrendering to Islam, eliminating it, or prodding Muslims to change it, they should choose the last of the three options. Among the ten ways Steyn mentions that would lead to change in Islam, the first is promoting not extreme feminism but the genuine rights of Islamic women, which they do not have under Shar??a. The last way he mentions is military force. To keep a dangerous primitivism from destroying the free world, Steyn argues, America must exert a strong will to live.
