Secrets of the Desert is the second volume of the Judge of Egypttrilogy. It is based on historical fact with plenty of fictionmixed in. It follows the life of Judge Pazair, a conscientious man, who hasstumbled on a conspiracy to overthrow the pharaoh, Ramses II. Thebook opens in a prison yard in the middle of the ancient Egyptiandesert. Pazair has been wrongly imprisoned, without trial, forthe murder of his mentor, Branir. His wife, Neferet and spiritualbrother, Suti, have been told that he died in an accident.Pazair escapes from the prison and almost dies of dehydration in thedesert. He is found by two Sand-Travellors, who capture him andintend to enslave him. His is rescued by Suti, and they go toMemphis to clear his name. Pazair is promoted to Judge of the Porch, and is entrusted with theinvestigation into the conspirators. He tracks down five people,who are involved in the case, but he is unable to find out who they areworking for. He is helped by his friend, Bel-Tran, director ofthe country?s trade and finance, who gives him inside information onthe accomplices? accounts and businesses. Several attempts aremade on Pazair?s life, as he gets closer and closer to the truth.You feel that you know who the criminals are in this book, but there isa wonderful turn of events in the final pages. There is plenty ofadventure and suspense, and you will not want to put it down.
