The Politics Of Changing Human Geography's
(Ron Johnston)
ctAdiscipline's changing agenda involves the introduction of new practiceswhich challenge those already deployed and may at least partly replacethem. Historians of human geography have identified several majorchanges over recent decades but have been less successful in accountingfor them. This paper adopts a recently-formulated model of disciplinarychange, to which it adds a missing political element. It argues for theimportance of mobilizing support for a new agenda among students andother new entrants to the discipline, in which textbooks can play asubstantial role. Several recently-published texts are analysed toillustrate their use as political tools in attempts to promoteparticular visions of human geographical practices.
