Arthur Dent, a plain and mild mannered man wakes up with a horrible hangover, only to remember that his house is due for demolition to make way for a by-pass. While lying in the mud in front of a bulldozer Arthur is confronted by his friend Ford Prefect who, dragging him to the pub, explains that he is really an alien who works as a researcher for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and that they must thumb a ride off of Earth before it is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace by-pass. Soon Arthur is on a Vogon space ship, and narrowly escapes death when himself and Ford accidentally end up on the ship of Zaphod Beeblebrox. Zaphod happens to be the eccentric and unstable President of the Universe who is piloting a rare ship with the ability to hop anywhere in the universe. Thus unfolds an odd and unpredictable story of dumb luck, destiny, and the search for the answer to the ultimate question. What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything? Douglas Adams writes this story in the late seventies giving even more credibility to his cynical and silly insights into the deepest working of the universe. A triumph among science fiction fans and a comedy to the theoretic physicist, this is a must read that makes one laugh and fall in love with the characters but also takes serious consideration of the true irony present in all things.
