The Diamond Necklace
(Guy de Maupassant)
The diamond necklace is one of Guy?s stories which would leave you with mixed feelings. It?s a story about a female who thinks that she is caught in the eternal web of poverty with her husband humble job, decides to borrow her friend?s ?diamond? necklace for a party. After an evening of enjoyment and flaunting of weath, when she leaves the party she discovers that the necklace is gone! She and her husband search high and low but in vain. They can?t find it.In order to avoid the shame of feeling like a thief in front of her friend, the couple buys an exact copy of the necklace and returns it to the friend. In fact they are relieved that she did not notice the replacement. However for a poor couple like them who could only enjoy the simple pleasures of life, the purchase of an expensive ( real diamonds !!! ) necklace becomes the yoke for their necks and they spent their 20 years in gathering the money to pay back the moneylender. They slog through their lives to pay off the debt without any thought for comfort and luxury. The climax of the story leaves you openmouthed when the couple along with the readers is told by the friend in a really lighthearted manner that the necklace was a fake !! Only if they had known that the necklace was simply an imitation and not the real thing!
