The Pearl
(John Steinbeck)
Kino, a fisherman so poor that didn?t even have the money to marry Juana, the mother of his son and the woman he lived with, finds a small treasure: a great pearl, so big and beautiful it was called the Pearl of the World. With the pearl comes two things: the greed, jealousy and covetousness of people, on one hand, and, on the other, Kino?s good wishes to have a better future by having the chance to get married, to buy clothes, to buy a riffle and to send Coyotito, his son, to school to learn what was on the books. Unfortunately, bad things happen. The pearl buyers try to cheat Kino into buying the pearl cheap, which he refuses to accept. Along with that, Kino sees himself forced to repel three different attacks from men trying to steal the pearl from him. On the third, he ends up killing a man. Fearful of what might happen then, Kino runs away with Juana and Coyotito, but trackers follow them. On the night Kino fights his pursuers, Coyotito is shot and killed. The pearl, then, loses the sparkle of hope for Kino and Juana; instead, it becomes the symbol of misfortune. They head back to their town and throw the pearl in the sea to be lost forever?A book so small and simple as it is beautiful and moving.
