In Spite Of The Gods: The Rise Of Modern India
(Edward Luce?s)
IN SPITE OF THE GODS: THE RISE OF MODERN INDIA In The Economist?s round up of 2006?s best books was Edward Luce?s In spite of the Gods: The Rise of Modern India. Luce, a former Financial Tines India correspondent, argues that India?s strengths lie not in religious traditions, but in its history of pluralism and the vibrancy of its democracy. Says The Economist, ?A perceptive and witty book that is set to become the definitive generalist?s on account of India?s political, economic and social development and its future prospects?Diversity, as Mr Luce notes, is India?s greatest strength. He lists four ?Herculean challenges facing country. Three are daunting enough: the urgency of lifting nearly 300 million Indians out of absolute poverty; stemming the spread of HIV and AIDs; and preventing the wrecking of the environment. The fourth is protecting India?s liberal democratic system, which provides the best hope of dealing with the first three and is the fundamental reason for optimism. As Mr. Luce puts it: ?India is not an autopilot to greatness. But it would take an incomplete pilot to crash the plane.?
