Beginning to read the new fascinating novel by Giorgio Faletti, we are immediately and completely involved into the atmosphere of Flagstaff, a small town in Arizona. It seems that all is calm but, like in every thriller, suddenly mysterious deaths start to happen. The writer draws the characters very precisely and leads us through a story that takes place both in the present and in the second half of the eighth century. Faletti treats with ability the problem, never completely solved, of the relationship between the Indian Navajos? tribe and United States government. The protagonist is Jim Mackenzie, an helicopter pilot, born from a Navajo mother and a white father. These mixed origins are reflected in his restless character and in his endless search for another place, different from the one he is in each moment. But, in occasion of the death of his grandfather, with whom he grew up, he understands that you can?t find outside what you don?t have inside of you. And trying to solve the enigma of a series of murders, Jim has the opportunity to think about his youth and his roots. The story goes back in time because it is necessary to discover the truth about the killing of a white family and an Indian encampment occurred more than a century ago. These facts are linked to the construction of the railroad across the United States and Indians? land and the speculations that were tried against the latter. In this book it is also spoken about ?shamans? and traditions that probably we don?t understand, but not all that cannot be explained is impossible. Among the characters there is the dog Silent Joe with its incredible behaviour and awareness. In the novel are interlaced the stories of April, Jim?s former girl-friend, Alan, Jim?s ex best-friend and now Iraqi war hero, and Swam, an actress of worldwide fame. To be together again after ten years will help everyone to sort out of their past left suspended.
