The Comfort Trap (or, What If You Are Riding A Dead Horse)
(Ms. Judith Sills, PH.D.)
When we are in a happy & comfortable situation, we feel that life is enjoyable & worth living. However, some times we feel that things like job, boss, family, relationships, friend circle & financial position etc. in our life, are not to our liking & not satisfying, & we fear for future happenings in our life. We are however unable to decide, to push ourselves from this position(called comfort zone or comfort trap),to a better & improved position. We feel that present position is comfortable, safe & secured, even though it is not to our satisfaction. Whether we are busy, suffering or happy, we are familiar with it. We are unable to take the risk of changing, & moving to a zone of more happiness. With some people moving forward, a few may fail, but many will reach a zone of more satisfaction, enjoyment & richness. How should we do it? Many of us continue to be in our present place of comfort, until we decide to take a plunge to change the scenario, or destiny forces us to make the changes. Only a few are able to take, bold & confident decisions, for crossing over this so called wall. In such situations, changes in life in most cases, can be brought about, by medication or psychotherapy. In nine Chapters of this book of psychotherapy, the author discusses & gives details of seven important steps, which can initiate changes in our life, as per our wish. This book is a guide for us to break the pulling power of the comfort zone, crossing the boundary & reaching to the other side. In one of the important Chapters of this book, the author describes the procedure of seven steps. First of all, we have to decide to face that thing, which is causing discomfort to us. We have to find out, as to how we can avoid it, & keep ourselves away from its effects, so as to reduce our emotional problems. Secondly, with the present position of fears, we have to have a realistic vision, & think as to what we can do towards that goal. In this way, a new comfort area will be created. Thirdly, howsoever bad may be the position, we must decide to continue to go ahead, & never to quit. Fourthly, we must identify the pattern of things in our life from our past events, to find out as to what we should do next. Fifthly, we should visualize the reasons, due to which we are unable to dissociate ourselves from the present & move forward in our life, & in what manner if at all, this going forward will harm us. Sixthly, we have to necessarily face & overcome, this fear & anxiety. Lastly, to move forward, we have to take actions for effecting changes. For this purpose we have to ascertain, what exactly will help us in changing, & which movements should be made internally, so that these can result into outside actions. It is for us to visualize about our life, & decide about timing for the changes, understand past patterns of our life, give up some of the attachments of the present, overcome the anxiety, & jump over even if that area is not fully known. There are obstacles & potential problems in the above steps, & we have to have our strategy to resolve these problems. This book is a guide for us, & it is expected to help us, in easily reaching our destination. It is better to be dynamic, rather than static. We have to fight our inertia, have faith, & get a new path, rather than waiting for something to happen, by effects of others or destiny. Who knows, we may be delighted to be there.
