The Kite Runner
(Khalid Hosseini)
My friend Rahim Khan called me. He told me, "there a way to be good again". That's how Khaled Hosseini's Kite Runner opens and grabs you from the first leaf itself. A man's journey to free himself of a guilt is poignant and hitting. What makes it beautiful is the contrasting backdrop as the story travels from New York to a post war Afghanistan. A simple story ofAamir who goes in search of his best friend, later realising that he was Aamir's step brother. Though the brother is dead his son is there in Afghanistan. The goal is clear, to rescue the boy. To achieve it Aamir must re live various chapters of his life and see the same streets again. leaf by leaf his life opens up in front of him as he meets all the people he had left in Kabul who are now in different positions. One amongst them is a bulley, a Taliban leader now. What makes The Kite Runner mysterious is the way character build up and remind you of feautures you have read earlier. Beautiful, a single night's read. You just can't drop it if you have read the first thirty pages. Aseem Arora says ****1/2
