Brideshead Revisited
(Evelyn Waugh)
Brideshead Revisited is a short novel by British author Evelyn Waugh, exploring the decline of tasteful wealth and the 'old order', and its subsequent replacement by plainness and ostentatiousness. The novel does this through the protagonist Charles Ryder, a wealthy young man who becomes entangled with the dysfunctionalFlyte family through his friendship with Sebastian, youngest son of the enourmously wealthy Lord Flyte.
The book also covers Lord Flyte's conversion to Catholicism, very much a sideline issue in the novel, however one of great importance to Waugh: he too converted to Catholicism later in his life.
This novel can be recommended to anyone who enjoys well written, emotive story-telling; it is an excellent example of Waugh's abillity to evoke feelings of nostalgia and empathy in the reader. Under normal circumstances the present writer - and many others! - would struggle to sympathise with protagonists from such opulent backgrounds; their issues pale in comparison to those faced by many 'ordinary' people every day, yet the overall effect of this novel on me was one of sadness and tradgedy. Brideshead Revisited is a sad and beautiful book, which I would reccomend to anyone.
