When Panic Attacks (the New Drug-free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life)
(David D. Burns, M.D.)

Every one knows that, anxiety & worry are a part of life. Within some reasonable limits, these may cause irritations & troubles here & there. But beyond these limits, living itself may become problematic, & desired achievements may become elusive. In our life we face various types of emotional problems, e.g. fear of public speaking, fear of appearing in a test or examination, various types of phobias, shyness, continuous worrying about our job or work, health, family, relationships, doubts of success, feeling of insecurity, depression etc. This anxiety is not based on reality or truth, but on non-existent things. A large number of individuals, suffer from such problems. In such conditions, we can not have a peaceful & relaxed life, can not enjoy happiness in company of others, can not be creative & can not do our job satisfactorily. In twenty four Chapters, contained in five parts of this book on psychotherapy, the author discusses & explains various tools, as to how such problems can be resolved, without the use of drugs, with patience, common sense, courage, & the line of treatments developed through practical techniques. In this way, the required changes in our life can be effected. Based on his experience, the author claims that not only partial, but full recovery is possible with these techniques. However the author cautions that, these techniques are not substitute for consultation &/or treatment with a qualified mental health professional. But these techniques are useful, even when the medication is on. Depending on the severity of the problem & duration of the suffering, it is possible that, these techniques may not work for some individuals, & they may need the medication.
The three Chapters in part five "Selecting the techniques that will work for you" appear to be the most important, for the general public or the patients. The author has given a list of various such tools as "forty ways to defeat your fears" However, it is very difficult to predict, as to which technique will work for whom, & we have to go by trial & error, trying each technique one by one, & if not found effective, to try the next one. The author advises to put one negative thought in the middle of a Recovery Circle as a trap, outside of which are sixteen arrows, which are ways in which we can escape from the trap. Depending on the problem faced, we should select & write the names of techniques from the list of forty, as per our judgement & with the help of two tables in this Chapter, & write alongside these 16 arrows. These techniques are to be tried out one by one, till we are able to find that one, which works for us, with the changing of the technique to be done by us, as reasonably fast as possible. There is no single technique, which works for all ailments. Change may be caused in two ways. Each technique may help in slowly reducing the basic negative thought, or suddenly some technique may give dramatic results & transformation for the good. If first sixteen techniques are not helpful, we should try the next sixteen with patience. Details of many techniques have been given, but individualized approach is indicated, for solving such problems. When one feels better with the help of some technique, it should mean that the technique for handling & tackling our problem, is now known to us. This is because this problem may come to the same person again, & when it does recur, then the individual is now aware of action to be taken. We must take it for granted that, relapse is going to recur, may be in a few days, weeks or months. When it does happen, we should use our earlier successful technique once again, & solve our problem. We can also prepare for this relapse period in advance, by the Relapse Prevention Training. If one fights back we can bounce back. Talking in a philosophical way, both good & bad instances, are parts of anybody's life. Happiness & srrow, good health & suffering will also come at different times in one's life. Unpleasant things will happen, & we will have to deal with them. We ourselves have to learn, as to how to deal with & get over, such bad patches of life.
