Confessions Of An Economic Hit Man
(John Perkins)
John Perkins was an economic hit man or EHM. This means he went to various developing countries as part of a corporate survey team and forecasted growth the country would never have. The reason ? The country would then incur large loans for such "necessary development" and pay the money to Perkin's engineering company. When, years down the line, the country was unable to repay debts (the 'forecasted development' not having happened), the US Hawks moved in - and demanded economic, political and military favours. And Perkins was one among thousands. What's amazing about this book is the rapid cut-to-the-chase style in which Perkins reveals all. Adding substantially to this is the fact that Perkins actually has a lot to reveal - he was later promoted in the company and performed far more ghastly functions than the afore-mentioned. Also stunning is the simplicity with which Perkins unravels complicated economic and financial frauds and the relationship he builds between psychological, sociological and economic scenarios. The contention with this book is the abrupt wrap-up ending, where Perkins seems to simplify the systems' failings a bit.
