Anthem
(Ayn Rand)
Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand that takes an in-depth look at the subject of equality among men. All men are treated as equals. All children are born in the Home of the Infants; once they are of age they are sent to the Home of the Students. Once they have graduated school, a council assigns each person a job. A young boy named Equality is given the job of a Street Sweeper. Although Equality strives to behave like everyone else, he can't help but wonder about things. He doesn't understand the overwhelming desire he has to learn. Men in Equality's time are supposed to love one another equally, but Equality can't help but be dangerouslyattracted to a young farm girl he meets. One day while out working, Equality discovers an old subway tunnel. He goes there frequently and starts conducting scientific experiments. Soon after he creates electricity. Thinking that his discovery could benefit mankind, he takes it the Council of the Scholars. Instead of being delighted, the Council accuses Equality of trying to overthrow the government by conducting unauthorized tests. They threaten Equality with death. Equality runs away into the forest on the outskirts of the city he lives in, and is soon followed by the farm girl he fell in love with. Together they trek deeper into the woods. They find an abandoned house, and Equality begins to read the books he finds there. He takes the name Prometheus, and gives the girl the name Gaea. Gaea becomes pregnant with their child, and they stay in the house, slowly clearing away the dust and neglect. Prometheus knows that one day when he understands more about the past and himself, he will go back to the city and try to change things. But for now, he and Gaea decide to live together and raise their family. This book is an excellent read for someone who doesn't like the thick books, like J.R.R. Tolkien, but who still wants a good read with a new and intricate plot.
