The Old Man and the Sea is a touching story of the might of a man?s will against the forces of his environment. It talks of the will power of an old fisherman Santiago who goes without being able to catch fish for 84 days at a stretch; to the point that his peers start calling him unlucky. There is a young lad who accompanies him in his fishing forays but even he is asked by his parents to leave the company of Santiago. But all this does not leave the old man deterred.

Santiago packs his gear and leaves again as usual early in he morning thinking that was the day when his luck would turn in his favor.Santiago ventures deep into the sea. Hemingway describes every bit of emotion that Santiago feels. His love for nature, the feeling of oneness, of being a part of nature is appalling. Santiago?s luck really changes when he finds the catch of his lifetime, a giant marlin. But the fish is not like the ones he had netted before. This was a fish that earns Santiago?s respect so much so that he calls the marlin his ?brother? but he says as much as I love you, ?I must kill you?. The war of the titans starts both through the mind and body. The fish is as determined as Santiago and pulls him further away from shore for two consecutive days till finally Santiago kills it and tows it back ashore only to be swarmed by sharks that scrape every pound of meat away from the marlin.

The story is all about man andthe respect that he commands through the respect that he willingly gives to those who deserve it. We cannot help but sympathize with Santiago. The book is fast but touching. There are many facets of Santiago. The childlike innocence in his weathered face, in his words, in the twinkle in his eye, all are built against the strong character and sense of principles and as with his enormous physical strength and endurance. Overall a great read. No wonder Hemingway got a Nobel for this masterpiece.
