The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time
(Mark Haddon)
Imagine the most complex, technological gadget you own. Maybe it's an MP3 player, a digital camera, or your laptop. Now, Imagine peeling back the cover of that gadget. Instead of microscopic electronic-y digital thing-ys, you find a miniature person with elementary drawings of the inner workings. Everything suddenly seems clear to you. In his book about an adolescent boy with severe autism, Mark Haddon englightens the average reader about the seemingly strange inner workings of the autistic mind. The incident in question is the murder of a neighbor's beloved pet. The main character (the autistic child) has information about the incident but no means of communicating that information. Through vivid, sensory descriptions, Haddon carries the reader along through the family turmoil, emotional duress and eventual resolution of the mystery. For example, the color yellow seems to disturb the boy and as outsiders to his autism, the parents are at a loss to explain this. The reader is welcomed inside this foreign environment as if the boy were able to tell his own story. As a mystery and as a window into the autisticmind, this is an enlightening work.
