A Scandal in Bohemia The King of Bohemia turns up in London, seeking Holmes? help in retrieving a photograph of him and his former lover Irene Adler, which she threatens to reveal on his wedding day. Holmes uses a trick to find out where it is hidden, but when the next day he arrives at her house to steal it, she is gone. Irene explains in a letter that she had overheard his plan and fledabroad with Godfrey Norton, whom she had married the day before, but will not blackmail the King because she does not care about him anymore. A case of identity Miss Mary Sutherland?s fiancée, Hosmer Angel, is missing. Holmes discovers that her stepfather married her mother for money and later seduced Mary under disguise, made her promise fidelity and then left her at the altar in order to keep her at home, as she promised she would let him use her money as long as she was staying there. The Red-Headed League Mr. Jabez Wilson gets a well-paid, nominal job in the Red-Headed League. Holmes deduces that the League is a hoax and a way to get Wilson out of his house, from the basement of which a famous criminal John Clay is running a tunnel to a nearby bank. The Boscombe Valley mystery James McCarthy is charged with the murder of his father. Although the evidence is clearly against him, Holmes finds out that the killer was their neighbour Turner whom McCarthy had been blackmailing for years, and was recently trying to force him to give consent to his daughter's marriage with McCarthy's son.
