I have always been interested in reading & enjoying short stories. While I was selecting some such books, I could quickly lay my hands on this book. It is a collection of twenty seven true stories, one out of which is "Magical Thinking". I read the stories patiently, & I found them interesting, entertaining & funny. Each story is generally different in content, & its method of dealing. A simple case of handling of a rat in the bath tub, has been described in detail, like a horror story. Many of us are sick of telemarketers, & we are able to do very little to reduce or avoid their irritating us, or encroaching upon our time. The writer describes as to how he took revenge on some of them. The story about the model, ends on a happy note, with good prospects of its main character, becoming a top male model. The story about dating a male undertaker, has the novelty & fear of such an affair, & ends with "And we kissed for a long, hungry time". The story of the troublesome cleaning lady has a hilarious end, as follows "And we dropped.....Six bags, altogether. Nine hundred dollars, exactly. In pennies." Another altogether different story, narrates about the occurrence of a bubble (or cyst) at the top inside roof of the mouth, its self surgery, experience with the dentist & completion of the so called "roof work". The story about transsexuals, tells about their aspirations & problems. The story "My last first date" narrates about, date of the character with another male, & towards the end, the writer states "And tonight after my first date with Dennis, it's different". The story "...our sponsor" exposes the world of advertising, as to how they mislead the general public. In the story "Beating Raoul", the writer narrates about unsuccessful dating experience between two males, ending with "....that's a deal breaker".
In the story "Magical Thinking", based on which this book bears the same title, writer talks about superstitious Thinking of some persons, & the fear that some thing bad may happen, if they do some thing in some particular way. The writer calls this magical thinking, where one believes that, he exerts more influence on the events, then probably he can. At some places in some stories, the language used is intimate & bawdy & some words with sexual bent have been used. Even a lady character has been depicted to speak such language, may be to show the extent to which her character was bad.
