Rebels On The Backlot
(Sharon Waxman)
This may be the greatest book ever written about film directors. Waxman tells the story of not one, but many of the directors that came to power in Hollywood in the 1990?s. Tanatino, David O. Russell, Spike Jonze, Steven Soderberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson, just to name a few. The striking difference between this and other books on the same individuals is that Waxman tells it like it is. The book covers areas of the artists? lives that few industry publications take the time to discuss. From pre-stardom to the present she presents the reader with an honest and unbiased account of the director?s lives. Where most authors would selectively release information in order to remain in the good graces of the subjects, Waxman fearlessly and honestly present all sides of every story. A perfect example would be the rocky relationship between Tarantino and former film buddy Roger Avary and the disputes that arose between them over writing credit on the Indie film sensation Pulp Fiction. She goes into great detail regarding emotional and creative problems and how they affected the lives of everyone around these directors as they climbed the ranks of the Hollywood studio system. From Spike Jonze being nearly forgotten about on the set of Being John Malcovich due to the corporate upheaval of the studio, to the feud between George Clooney and David O. Russell on the production of Three Kings, this book provides an insider glimpse into what it meant to be an independent film director in the 90?s.Aiding the material is a well thought out and clear writing style that makes the book an enjoyable read. Anyone who truly loves film, independent or otherwise, really owes it to themselves to read this book. It is an addictive read and hard to put down once it has been picked up.
