The Old Man And The Sea
(Ernest Hemingway)
This short novel was written in 1952 and describes a history of an old fisherman, named Santiago. He fishes with a boy called Manolin who wants to lern fishing. Unfortunetly Santiago has a bad luck and since 40 days can't catch any fish.Parents forbid Manolin to go with the old fisherman and order him to findanother boat. The following day Santiago sails out alone. It is a turning-point for him.At first, he catches a small tunny, which he uses as a bait. After a short time, Santiago feels that a biggerfish nibbles. He doesn't know that it is a huge marline. He only has a feeling that it's areal giant, because he can't pull it nearer to the boat. The fish resists him. The killing fight between Santiago and the marline begins. The fish pullshis boat to the ocean. The fisherman misses the boy, because he knows that his helpwould be involuable. He calls to his mind their common journeys, talksto birds and even to the marline. Santiago does all those things just to kill the loneliness. The fight takesfor him an unfavourable turn. At first,a rope ofa fishing-rod buries into Santiagos'hand whenthe fish draws harder. Finally he falls over and cuts his superciliary, but he still hasthe marline o his fishing-rod.These are not all Santiagos' physical diseases. After hurting his hand, the fisherman has a painful contraction. He still has the fish on the rope and a consolation for him are his memories from youth. Santiago remembers wrestling withNegro for hole day. Many years ago Satniago won and the memory about that eventmakes him stronger. He believes he can whip the fish, although he still doesn't know the size of the marline. Santiago perceives that whenthe fish protrudes. It turns out that it's bigger than the boat. The fisherman is very excited. Santiago starts to win when the fish begins to go round. It means that it's tired. When the marline circles around the boat, Santiago uses his harpoon and hurts its heart. The marline isdead and he draws the fishinto the boat. He decides to go back to the island, unfortunetly it's avery long journey because the fish pulled him far away.To Santiagos'despair, sharks swim up allured by the blood of the marline. The fisherman tries to defend by using thepaddle with the knife at the end.He drivesaway two of them but he also losses hislast weapon. Since then, theothers predators eat the vestige of the fish. WhenSantiago reacheshis destiny, he has only the skeleton. He is so tired that during his way to a palm hut he falls down several times. The old mandozes off... The following day, he is woken up by Manolin who during the absence of Santiago was worried about him, because he didn't know whathappened to him. At the same time, other fishermen and tourists admire the huge skeleton of the fish. The boy promises to stay with the old manregardless of his parents opinion.Manolin wants to learn fishing fromSantiago. This tragic history is very evocate. Neverthelessmy summary doesn't show the drama of the old man. That's why -as the authorof this summary- Ihave remorses that I have compressed that beautiful story, beacauseI know some of you after reading that tale won't read the hole book. That's not the purpose of summaries!!! I want toturn you onreading"The Old Man and the Sea"because it's a really short story but also valuable.
