The Godfather is both the most exceptional work of Mario Puzo and one of the most meaningful and popular books in the history of literature. It tells the story of the cliquish family of Corleone. The story starts just after World War II. The first piece of the plot's domino is the meeting of the Godfather Vito Corleone with Sollozzo, during which Sollozzo puts forward a proposition of cooperation in drug dealing.It is turned down, but Vito's oldest son, Santino (Sonny), accidentally joins the conversation, showing interest in the businness. As a consequence of this seemingly unimportant event, Sollazzo commits and attempt on don Corleone's life. In the meantime, Corleone's counsellor (consigliori) Tom Hagen is kidnapped. Sollozzo tells him that Vito is dead and asks the family of Corleone to join the narcotic enterprise, explaining that the murder of Vito was just a business matter, as the "old guy" was an obstacle. However, just before setting Hagen free, Sollozzo learns that the attempt was unsuccessful and the severly wounded Vito is in a hospital. A few days later Sollazzo, together with the police captain who managed to get rid of Vito's guards, wants to finish him off, but Corleone gets saved by his youngest son Michael who moves him to another room. After this yet unsuccessful attempt of murder Sollozzo appoints a meeting, choosing Michael, who used too keep away from the family's doings (he was a war hero) to represent the Corleones. Michael decides to kill Sollozzo and the corrupted police officer. During the meeting in a restaurant he goes to the restroom where a he previously hid a gun and kills them both. Now Michael needs to escape the police and other cliques, so he flees to Sicily. In New York, a long war between cliquish families commences. Sonny becomes its victim - tricked to go out of his well secured house by the husband of his sister Connie, he gets shot on a road. In the meantime, in Sicily Michael marries a local girl, but their happiness is short-lived, as she dies in an attempt on her husband's life. The recovering Vito Corleone's aim is to is to get Micheal home safely, so he meets the heads of all cliques in order to make peace. In return, his family has to enter the drug business. When Michael returns, Vito makes his the head of the family and prepares him for the full takeover of its businesses after his own death. They are planning to legalize the business by buying a hotel with a casino in Las Vegas and earn money on legal gambling. They also come up with a plan of eliminating all the family's enemies. Upon Corleone's death, Tessio (caporegime- the head of a division supervised by the Corleones) asks Micheal to meet don Barzini, the head of the most powerful clique among Corleone's enemies. The young don accepts the proposition, although he knows very well that this is a trap and Tessio is a traitor. The meeting is appointed after the christening of Michael's nephew, but it never actually takes place, as the previously prepared attack is realized. Michael's men kill all the family's enemies and most importantly don Barzzini. What is left is to take care of the traitors. Tessio dies first, after that Michael visits his in-law, who was responsible for Santino's death, and after making him confess his fault he strangles him with a garota. Thus Michael becomes the head of the most powerful family in the whole U.S.
