Nicholas Nickelby
(Charles Dickens)

Publicidade
Nicholas Nickleby is a typical Charles Dickens novel, set in a Victorian era Britain. It's been a long time since I read the novel. But I feel justified to write something about it since the story is unique and captivating enough to remember it long after you have read it. The following is a brief account of the story without revealing names. The protagonist (Nicholas Nickelby) is a poor young man whose father has just died leaving him his sister and mother to support. There is no single evil antagonist in the story. Instead there are a couple of rather unpleasant characters that the young Nicholas encounters as he strives to take care of his family.

The main protagonist is actually Nicholas's rich uncle. However through a strange turn of events at the end of the novel you end up feeling sorry for his uncle.Nicholas also encounters a lot of other characters including a young man who has had nothing but misery in his life. His benefactors include the proprietor of a drama troupe, and a farmer. As the story progresses we would be forced to fall in love with the character. We would start identifying ourselves with the unfortunate situations he finds himself in, and his way of dealing with them.

icholas takes on the role of a school teacher, drama artist, and clerk. The most amazing aspect of the story is with respect to the twists and turns that take place out of nowhere. One moment Nicholas is a placid, gentle yes boss person, and the next he turns into a roaring lion. His most wonderful aspect is how straight and simple he is. The other character of considerable importance is Nicholas's uncle who is rich, stingy, un-married etc. He does help out Nicholas's family if there is something in it for him. Also his mother and sister contribute an adorable family segment to the story.

Romance only comes in the later part of the story, but it is terribly sweet and pure. Unlike the higher class romance stories Nicholas's romance is with someone who is in a similar position as him. It's very practical and devoid the vanities of other Victorian romance novels. The end is a bit tragic but nevertheless fulfilling. It's a must read classic of the Victorian age.
