The Poisonwood Bible
(Barbara Kingsolver)
This novel is the story of a missionary family in the Belgian Congo during the turbulent 1960's and 70's. Nathan and Orleanna Price and their daughters Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth travel to the Congo to baptise and convert the people of a village only to find themselves unwelcome. In the Congo, they face disapproval, revolution, starvation, and tragedy before each seeking their own way out.
Told through the points of view of the five Price women, this novel covers a very broad span of time and paints a picture of the collapse of colonialism in Africa, set against the colonization of these women.
