The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
(Mark Twain)
The epic adventure story of Huckleberry Finn (or as originally intended by Mark Twain: the biography of Huckleberry Finn) took many various directions in its conception. Twain conceived it as a follow up to the, at the time, much loved "Adventures of Tom Sawyer". The book revolves around thecomingof age of the heroinHuck Finn. It follows the boy from his loathing of his life under the guardianship of the (caring, but narrow minded)widow Douglas and her stubborn friend Miss Watson. Who then is taken prisoner by his drunken father intent on stealing the fortune he found treasure hunting at the end of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". He escapes by faking his own death and encounters Jim, a friendly run away slave from the widow Douglas's property. Both exiles in their own right, Huck becomes determinedto help Jim reach freedom by rafting down the Mississippiriver to the free states. Along the way they encounter a comedy of errors (the Duke and Dauphin, being adopted by the Grangerfords, Peter Wilkes's funeral, and missing the Jim's chance of freedom due toa heavy mist over the river). Yet, they learn to respect and like each other, in spite of the fact that Huck, as was the status quo at the time, believes he is committing a sin by helping a runaway slave. Ultimately, Jim is deceived by the Duke and Dauphin and sold to a farm for $40. Huck in an attempt to rescue Jim realizes the farm belongs to Tom's Aunt Sally and plays along with her misconception that Huck is Tom. Ultimately Tom does arrive and in his usual fashion garners ridiculous ideas to help free Jim. In the end Tom gets shot in the escape only to confess that the widow had died and in her will set Jim free. It is a moving story of a young boy that questions the prejudice that surrounds his society. A boy that grew up outside of what was deemed appropriate, and ironically, is thus able to make the, arguably, morally correct choices.
