A Tale Of Two Cities
(Charles Dickens)

Publicidade
With the French Revolution as a backdrop, the Tale of two Cities weaves together an extraordinary tale across England and France and all the trails and tribulations of very existence. At the core of the story lies Dr.Manette who had been forcible imprisoned after protesting against injustice by the Marquis brothers. He had a grevious secret to bear. He was mentally unstable and his reunion with daughter Lucie is the high point of the story. Then there is Lucie herself, a bloomingh flower. It is also very much her tale. Her tale of caring for her father, her bravery, her love and marriage with Darnay and her becoming a mother in such troubled times. The book is memorable for Dr.Manette's second rebellion this time well over sixty. It is memorable for the intense characters of Mr. Lorry the trustworthy and worldly banker and his important role. It speaks of his assistant Jerry Cruncher and plans he privately made. It talks of Charles Darnay bearing a mysterious past and his acquittal in the court case thanks to the uncanny and unusual point picked up by Sydney Carton, who had something in common with Darnay which I will not reveal. It is memorable for Carton's love and his eventual sacrifice, for Mr.Stryver, for Defarge and his rebellion group, for Madame Defarge and her incredilble sharpness, for Miss Pross and her strength. Dickens brings out the ironic humour and sadness in the story. The full impact of a poverty and war-stricken country hits us hard. The cruelty of the Guilotine, the harrassment of people, indeed the inhuman happenings, the lawlessness, the filth, the dire poverty, hunger the depth of which we can only ascertain, the whole murky environment and the scintillting climax with Darnay finally getting out on the back of an immense sacrifice. Rightly rated as one of the best works of literature, this book awakens the rebel in us but yet drives home to us, the horrifying examples and effects of cruelty and violence. A book like no another, a plot like no other, Dicken's fleshes out his characters remarkably, building up a series of countenances making the book an enjoyable read. In all, a very good book, to be valued asa treasure.
