The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)
It begins one night with the murder of an elderly curator at the world famous Louvre museum. But this is far from a typical murder, evidence of which is the position in which the murder victim lies and his last acts before dying, a series of strange clues left to those who are now forced to investigate. But upon investigation, deeper questions must now be asked as the curator's daughter and a Western symbologist start to look for the reasons why the man was killed and what possible motive could exist for his murder. The famous Mona Lisa as well as other Da Vinci paintings provides the unlikely pair with clues on what quickly becomes much more than a simple murder investigation. But they are not alone in wanting answers to the questions of among other things; the story and divinity of Jesus and to who exactly was Mary Magdalene and what part did she play in Jesus' life and the founding of the church? There are other sinister players, lurking in the shadows who will go to extreme lengths both to conceal their own hand in the unfolding of events and also to prevent any answers which might damage the church from coming to light. The mysterious Teabing is just one such character who seems very interested in following the clues and finding what becomes to them, the equivalent of the Holy Grail. But a darker element also on the trail is the group known as Opus Dei, whose shadowy operative has his own reasons for finding the truth. With their lives in the balance, they must decipher the clues that Da Vinci and others have left for them while outrunning the authorities and keeping out of the clutches of the figures who have made themselves their enemies.
