A young and beautiful woman married a middle class man. He was a hard working man, who despite his best tries couldn't rise to the next stepof"socialladder" from the one upon which hestood. His wife lead a life typical to those women lead in middle class societies, which meant staying home, taking care ofthe house, cooking and cleaning. She wasveryresentful of the life she was living.She wished todwell inhigh society,come to their parties and charm men with her beauty, invoking envy from women. She dreamed of wearingexpensive jewelry and exquisite dresses. Unfortunately she couldn't afford those things and was reduced todreaming of such things. One time her husband won a lottery ticket which granted him invitation tothe partyin highsociety.Excited at the thought of pleasing hiswife, he rushed home to informher of good news. To his surprise she wasn't as excited as hethought, for she said she had nothing to wear. For years he was saving money to buy him a gun for long anticipated hunting.Upon hearinghis wife explanation he offered to give her themoney he saved for gun to buy her a dress. Happily she accepted. Soon she bought herself a beautiful dress.Alas, she was stillunsatisfied for she said she had no jewelry. Her husbandsuggestedinserting a flower. Shedidn?tlike the idea. Then he remembered that she had afriend whohasvariesdiamonds and necklaces in her possession. It was decided that she would ask herto borrow one of herjewelry. Sherushed to herfriend and explained the reason for her visit. Herfriend gladly agreed to lend herwhatever she liked. She spends some time going throughlots ofitems in front.Finally she has selected a largebeautifuldiamond necklace. When thenight of the partycameshe andher husband went there. At the party shecharmed men, who looked at herastonished by her beauty. Drunken fromfrom drinks and attention she danced and left a lasting impressionupon many people who wonderedwhy they haven't seen her before. Her husbandset modestly at the corner, happy and content that his wife was happy. When the party came tothe end and it was time to go home. Her husband tried to give her the coat, it was coldoutside. She escaped him, unwilling to wearan old jacket inhighsociety.The husband got her a cab. Together they went home. She seemedvery happy. Upon arriving home while undressing, she suddenly discovered that thediamond necklace was lost. They searched the entire apartment. The husband rushed on the street trying back tracing the loss of thenecklace. Nothing. They didn'tknowthe number of thetaxi. On the next morning they went to the store to see how much it would cost to buy the new necklace. After somesearching they found a necklacethat matched the one they just lost. The price washuge.Having nochoice but to buy it they decided to take it in credit. The necklace was given to them. As soon as they got it, the wife returned it to her friend; the lattermerely glanced at it and only remarked that she shouldhave brought it back sooner, for she herself might have needed it. Our heroine didn't sayanything. Now harsh days began. They wereeach working very hard trying to repay back theprice of thediamond necklace.Most of the spending was cut and the family economized on everything. Ten years have passed in thatmanner. Finally the last payment was made. They werefree. The debthas beenrepaid. The wife decided to go to the park for a little walk. Walking in the parks she sees afigure walking. Instantly she recognizedher.It was her friend.Years haven't changed her much. While our protagonistagedgreatly due to hard labor she was forced to endure throughoutthe lastten years. Now that the debtwas repaid it was time shedecided to tell herthe story. She called her. At firstherfriend didn't recognize her. But when she did, she was shocked of how she has changed. Out heroine told her howshehas lost herjewelry,replaced it with the new one and was forcedto work for ten years in order to pay for it.Her friend listened tn amazement.My poor, poorfriend, she exclaimed you didn't know? Thatdiamond wasn't real. Why it was hardly worth anything. (This is not a quote)
