Wildfire picks up one year after 9/11, on Columbus Day, 2002. Author de Mille brings back characters from previous books, Detective John Corey and Special Agent Kate Mayfield. Detective Corey is his usual wise-cracking self, refusing to kowtow to his superiors in a system that is based upon obedience and respect to authority. His wife, Kate, is somewhat successful in bringing him back under control. Corey and Mayfield?s colleague, Detective Harry Muller, is sent on assignment to keep the Custer Hill Club, in the Adirondack woods, under surveillance. He is not told the reason for the assignment, just to keep track of the comings and goings of the club. It is not long before he is caught and brought before the commandant of the club, Bain Madox. Muller is interrogated and kept prisoner, during which time he is allowed to attend a special session of the Custer Hill Club. A terrifying plot is outlined to the members, some of which are top U.S. government officials. Madox and his followers plan to use the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) to cause the United States to nuke several Middle Eastern cities. Since Muller is privy to this information, he is murdered soon after, although the killing is made to look like an accident. Madox is free to carry out his diabolical plan.Detective Corey and Special Agent Mayfield are sent to investigate Muller?s death. Soon, they uncover the clues that lead to the fact that Muller was not killed accidentally, but murdered. They need to find out why, but are thwarted in their efforts by the very people who employ them. It is up to them to stop Madox, whose plan to destroy millions of innocent people is going ahead full steam.Many of the highlights of this book involve John Corey?s irreverent wit and ingenuity in getting out of the stickiest situations. His wife, Kate Mayfield, is the perfect foil to his impertinence. Particularly of note are the exchanges between madman Bain Madox and John Corey.
