Spike It
(Chris Niles)
The ever witty Sam Ridley drunkenly stumbled upon a crime scene. And he wouldn't restuntil the perpetrator is brought to justice. After all, he was a crime reporter for London?s City Radio. Or at least, until a certainmishap on air almost cost him his career. Now he has to solve the mystery of a single mother?s murder amidst his personal problems and the frustration at work. Sam has to source content for the ladies moring show and that?s not exactly what he would call utopia. His smirky replacement and Female AM program manager, Felicia, get full marks for giving Sam a hard time. Then there is also a jealous, avenging police officer, whose estranged wife had a one night stand with our hero. But don?t get me wrong, Sam Ridley is an honourable chap with some loyal friends. There is Charlie, the police officer with whom Sam has a working relationship. And also the news editor at City Radio, whose moral support our hero can count on. Even Felicia had a change of heart (thanks to a common enemy). While some friends could help him from starters, others Sam met as he bravely ventured into London?s crime-ridden areas. Why? The murder?s prime witness, named Shark, and his connections all lived a dark life. While fishing in the murky waters that Shark calls home, some interesting characters turned up.This mystery caught Sam doing things he would never do under normal circumstances. Apart from breaking into a building, his involvement with a a close friend of the victim (Elaine York) gives some insight into the victim?s life. And the white-collar crime she tried to expose. But does zooming in on the victim really enable him to have a clear view of all that?s going on? Meanwhile, as life goes on, Sam misses his 10-year old son who lives in Australia. In the end, Sam realizes that the fraud commited by the Elaine York?s former spouse and its cover-up has nothing to do with her death. The murderer?s motive was personal. Sam solves the mystery and the murderer (Elaine?s brother-in-law) gets caught. Quite literally, as he ended up under a train while fighting off and wounding poor old Sam. Our hero gets his old job back and he is able to spend time writing to his son again.Spike It is a novel that gave thought about friendship and confidence. At the same time I got a glimpse of London?s crime problem. No page gets turned without a display of Sam Ridley?s unique sense of humour.
