The Seagull
(Anton Chekhov)

Publicidade
The Seagull centers around several characters: Arkadina, an actress; her son, a writer, Treplev; Nina, their neighbor who wishes to be an actress; and Trigorin, an experienced writer. The play opens with Treplev having written a new monologue play. Nina attempts to perform this new play, but she is stopped before she can finish. Arkadina finds the piece to be awful and uninteresting. This upsets Treplev a lot which causes Nina to stop her performance. Treplev is compared to Trigorin throughout by his mother; a terrible thing to him. He wishes to break free of the old rules of the theatre. He has new ideas and wants to prove just how valid they are. While his mother and Trigorin are away, Treplev builds a following because he is a strong writer. Nina makes a mistake and follows Trigorin. Her plans to become an attress do not work out the way she wishes. This is not enough for Treplev. He still feels like the outsider. His mother refuses to accept him for whom he is. The play ends a tragedy because he cannot deal with the misfortunes life has handed him.
