Memoria De Mis Putas Tristes
(Gabriel Garcia Marquez)
Regarded as a novella, in my opinion this book is a beutiful "long poem" for its great prose style defined in short wise phrases with a high reflexive content. Again this author marvels us with his very personal touch that extols love, though a singular form of love, such as love at old age. Many folks, at discovering this new creation, were unsettled at thinking of a 90 year old Man having sex with a 14 year old girl. This novel was misadvertised as such. Yet when we read it we discover that these characters are metaphores of life, since man is always seeking happiness, youth, love and life. What began as a small fantasy for an old man, going to bed with a virgin, turns into a confesion. Imagine how many stories and anecdotes there is within a 90-year old man? Slowly, without being aware and telling us parts of his life, the famous address book in which he kept notes on every woman he had had sex with, the main character takes us into a world unknown by many, at least by me, and which just a few would be lucky enough to know, in which at the office young girls flirt with him believing that due to his age he cannot respond sexually to them, in which a matron in connivance with corrupt authorities deals in human bodies and in female virginity, who introduces him to Delgadina, poor, tired, weak, and beautiful Delgadina, who is loved while asleep, a pure caste love, which transform the cheap room in the brothel into a love nest, among books and lessons which she loves to hear, pictures, classical music and boleros she so much loves to listen. This suddenly ends when the brothel is closed and the self-imposed exile of the madam leaves the poor man without a clue about his beloved, and so he desperately looks out for her, looking longingly at every girl in a bicycle, yet afraid he may no longer recognize her awake. The news of a street accident in which the model and the brand of a bicycle he once gave her as a present match, leaves towards a rendezvous with the former lover and to the longing for the recent past, and to the determination of never again let love go away, as well as the determination to never write again, and to resume love, all the while as he writes love letters to his beloved Delgadina, which are published by the newspaper, without her knowledge, though they delight his Sunday readers, and which are broadcasted aloud on Monday by a very famous radio announcer. They make people believe in love again, regardless of age, class, craft, dreams and fantasies. Slowly, the writer takes us from the longing of riding a bicycle to reflecting on why a poor cat has to be put to sleep for being old.In short, a very fine book, highly suitable for a nice afternoon meditating on love and old age.
