Presentation S.o.s (from Perspiration To Persuasion In 9 Easy Steps)
(Mark Wiskup)
There are many people, who are nervous & fearful of addressing an audience from a podium, & performing on the stage. They start having perspiration, voice changes, increase in heart beat, shaking limbs & difficulty in speech. For some others, it is an ordinary common place event. But some people make a solid powerful presentation, with force in their words, body language, tone of their voice & posture etc. We may have to talk to customers, colleagues, students or executives & we want them to express their happiness & appreciation of our performance. All this is possible to be acquired, if it is taken as a challenge, with positive attitude, a determination to succeed, & a will to forge a relationship with the audience. We will then be looking forward to, our next opportunity of presentation. In nine Chapters of this book, the author gives nine easy steps, which in his opinion, will transform one into a great presenter, with essential skills of presentation & confidence generated. As per the main points discussed in various Chapters of this book, fears are normal & these can be used to our advantage; a powerful main idea presented in the beginning connects the speaker to the audience; tell stories to support the above powerful idea; make a dynamic opening with all the above & minimizing use of numbers; eliminate use of seemingly harmless words & expressions; end the presentation with a bang & face the question & answer session boldly & prepare & practise for the presentation. However, in one of the important Chapters of the book, the author has advised the use of a friendly tool like Power point, which strongly connects an audience to the speaker, in an orderly & organized manner. Necessary slides should be made, with the power point of the computer. These can be made with minimal knowledge even. This tool is an easy & fast tool, for organizing & giving direction to the proposed presentation, & connecting to the people. It can give a jump start to our presentation & take fear out of us, since the thoughts, ideas & points are now logically organized & the people are expected to follow it. The slides should be in the structure of three parts, viz. Introduction, Body of the talk & Close. With a strong title of the talk & the points given in above paragraph, we should end with a big bang. The total number of slides should not be too many, so that there is order & no chaotic condition. However, there should be a slide giving overall summary, of what is planned to be presented in all the subsequent slides. But, most important thing is to practise & practise on the presentation, so that we are able to make it interesting & lively & not confusing & we are able to draw the attention of the audience. The author advises that the speaker must first speak a few words, & then the relevant slide should come on the screen (& not vice-versa), to reinforce what is spoken verbally. The words in the slides should be few, but interesting & helpful to what is spoken, & the size of letters should be large enough. Well begun is half done. So a thoughtful, effective, inspiring & energetic title page slide is very essential, so that the audience looks forward to see our presentation further. It requires creativity. In the presentation, a few simple charts & graphs etc. are all right, only in as much as, they are able to indicate trends & patterns etc. We should be able to explain them in a few easy sentences. The author does not advise the use of legend & clip art in the slides. Also pictures of real people should only be used, & that too, to a limited extent. The background of the slides should be simple, but such that, it enhances their value. Animation should be used, only if it suits our slides. Every time before changing the slide, we should speak a few words, for help in connecting to the audience. We should install & try our total audio-visual set up, by arriving much before the scheduled time, & all checks for electrical connection, clean image, clear sound, visibility etc. should be done in advance, so that we are ready to start at the scheduled time right away. Operation of the slides should be done from remote, so that it is hassle free. The effect of this solid preparation, will have a terrific influence on the audience & we will be able to pull through & get a pat on our back.
