Despite their pretentious and interfering mother and theunstableyounger sisters, these two sensible girls do heroically manage to maintain a sense of dignity. When both girls meet their matches in the two young male counterparts who move in next door, a series of contrived misunderstandings and calculated moves by their competition set the scene for a series of encounters. The novel has humurous anecdotes with the major characters principally being the minor officious characters, such as the ostentatious cousin who doesn't seem at all connected to reality and his patronness.
