Baligrod
(J.K)

Publicidade
The Jews appeared in Baligrod in 17th century and for many years they were making up a half of its inhabitants. There were two synagogues and a Jewish religious school. Before the outbreak of the II World War nearly all shops in Baligrod belonged to the Jews. The cemetery in Baligrod is situated on a hill, about 200-300 metres away from the market square. A few dozens of mazevas, which delight with their rich decorative art, have survived up to now. The oldest identified epitaphs date back to 1718. Nevertheless, most of headstones were used by the Nazis to toughen the market square. These gravestones, later covered with a layer of asphalt, are there up to now.
