The Dream Merchants
(HAROLD ROBINS)
THE DREAM MERCHANTS = BY HAROLD ROBINSThis is one of the best novels read by me some ten years back. itis beautiful novel - I call it beautiful because it has all thecharacters which are all only good men and women and who always keepthe human values and friendship above money.this book is not only about good people but also narrates the entiredevelopment of the of the moving picture industry from its initia levelof a two reel movies to the present level.every character in the novel is so well defined, made and if I am notexagerating, it a visual treat. You can see and feel the entirestory happening in front of your eyes while reading. Abeautiful novel. The bond of friendship between Peter kessler, a jew and John Edge, an American is really touching.Even the other characters in the novel such as Esther, Peter's wife,Doris, Mark, Joe Borden Rocco, Sam Sharpe, Jane, Al Santos - all speakfor themselves and all of them keep together both in rags and riches. The story is totally a flash told by John Edge. John Edge when he was only 18 years of age approaches Peter kesslerfor renting his shop and Peter immediately impressed by the youngman accepts for the same but advises John against starting anickelodeon as the previous one lost all his money.Yet John starts but loses and leaves the place with a note. The next one man comes and delivers a shipment meant for John.Peter allows the man to keep the machine inside the shop. One by nameJoes visits Peter the next day and tell him that he is there todemonstrate the machine delivered yesterday. By then Peter learnsthat John has left and feel sorry for him and tells his wife that he isnot worried of the three months rent owed by John but he should haveinformed him before leaving. Joe prevails upon Peter anddemonstrates machine. This is the projector which can two reelmovies.Peter takes up and makes a booming business and when the business growsout of his control, he sends a message to John to come back and helphim. John comes back and both develop their business into filmmaking not only two reel movies but also bigger one.Peter starts Magnum Pictures is the sole owner and John is the force behind him. Finally, their business grows to such a level that they makemovies, own studies , theatres and offices in all most allcountries .The burst of world war and John and Joe leave for enlistment. Inthe war, John loses one of his legs and Joe loses his life. When John prefers to stay only at Military hospital and did not divulgehis whereabouts, the role of Rocco and nicely made. With Rocco'sefforts, Peter descends at Military hospital and again takes him backto his home and promptly appoints him in his next post in the MagnumPictures. All characters were made in such a way that if people can stick together, they can achieve anything. A wonderful novel with a good theme and all information about the moving pictures is nicely provided. The narration of the story is gripping and makes the reader to stand on his toes.A salute to the great writer - HAROLD ROBINS.D.
