Cross

Dr. Alex Cross still has many questions regarding the murder of his wife that occurred over ten years before. In his 12th Alex Cross novel, James Patterson examines the not only the murder of Maria Cross via flashback and retelling by the main character, but also the mind of a paid assassin, Michael Sullivan, a.k.a. ?The Butcher?. Michael Sullivan is not only a killer, but a rapist as well. This is attributed to the fact that his father sexually abused him until Michael killed him and chopped him up. This gruesome cutting is revisited throughout the book, as Michael rapes women for sport, and silences them by showing them pictures of victims, whether they are mob bosses or other raped women, who have been casualties of his scalpel. He has an indirect connection to Alex?s late wife Maria?he raped a young woman who then contacted a social worker for counseling, who happened to be Maria. The young woman soon had her throat slit by Michael for talking about the rape. Maria was shot to death not long after. For more than ten years, Alex has had no clues to who killed his wife, until a recent rash of rapes similar to those that occurred around the time of Maria?s death start to happen. These rapes are traced to the Butcher, so Alex starts to track down this clever and resourceful killer to find answers to questions that have eluded him for so long. The character of the Butcher, although not a sympathetic one (he recognizes himself, that he is ?bad?, but does not have a desire to right his wrongs) is extremely fascinating, particularly in the retelling of events in his past that lead up to his misdeeds in the present day. The reader will also welcome the end of Alex Cross? suffering?not knowing who killed his beloved wife makes it difficult for him to move on; he always appears to be in a limbo, with this tragic event at the heart of it.Cross is an excellent read, with Patterson?s trademark short, page-turning readability and ubiquitous cliff-hanging ending.
