Cornelia is a tiny woman who is in love with love?her dream man looks like Cary Grant. One day, he walks into the café that she manages, and it is instant love?or is it?Clare is an eleven year-old whose mother is sick, mentally. Her father is emotionally distant. Is it any wonder that she identifies strongly with fictional orphans?Coincidentally, Cornelia?s new love and Clare?s estranged father are on and the same man. Cornelia and Clare meet up when Clare?s ill mother deserts Clare on the side of the road, forcing Clare?s father to accept her into his life. However, Cornelia is the one who ends up taking care of the precocious child, and the two become extremely close, so much so that Martin, Clare?s father, begins to get left out of the picture. This alienation is exacerbated by the arrival of Cornelia?s childhood friend and brother-in-law, Teo, with whom Clare immediately is infatuated. He returns the love, in a paternal way, and Clare, Cornelia, and Teo form a triangle. Martin is completely left out, and Cornelia tells him she is not in love with him. He goes to London on a business trip, and is killed in a car crash. This takes Martin out of the picture, but there is still the issue of Clare?s mother, Viviana, who is still among the missing.An aged neighbor with whom Cornelia was very close throughout her childhood dies, and leaves her house and all of its precious mementos to Cornelia, so she returns to her childhood neighborhood for the funeral with Teo and Clare in tow. On the ride up, she has the revelation that she has always been in love with Teo, but there is the complication that he is married to her sister. Cornelia?s family immediately takes in Clare, but it is not long before Viviana shows up to reclaim her daughter and mental health. At this point, it is up to Clare and Cornelia to make decisions that will affect them in the long term.
