University Writers Club
(SM Thompson)
University Writers' Club was a collection of poetry which I wrote again in Ireland and in England and was invited to read from this superb collection at the Poetry Cafe, London Poetry Society, Covent Garden, London. I must admit it was a stimulating evening and I read my poetry with several other poets on the stage of the London Poetry Society. I had a feeling of the past creeping into this and saw the readings almost like a reflection of my teenage and early 20s life where I had travelled a lot even though I worked full time out to Greece. I had been browsing through my DVD collection and was watching recently the DVD ... Zorba the Greek! This brought back enchanting memories of those idyllic days on the sandy beaches of the Greek mainland and surrounding islands. I start off with the poem "Salary " and dipping into this poem I found the lines .... "Planning the return" "To everlasting truth" struck me as prophetically correct. I will get by finally I know to becoming politically correct. and below I refer to the poem .. Winchester .. "Fighting is a strong word" but it manages to communicate strength of purpose even though the woman is seen as the weaker sex, there is a strength in poetic correctness. "Water meadows, vistas of Keats' Autumn" is wonderfully evocative of that special time of peace and tranquility which is all to short in the poet's life. Excellent reading ... keep on reading ...
