The Handbag Book
(SM Thompson)
A lot of talk about poetry and poets ... well, the other day I was talking to the waiter from Bulgaria at the local Hilton Hotel, and I declared myself a "poet". Well, wouldnt you just know it went down a treat because he then declared himself a student of English! I replied that it was better to be a recognized professional poet than a bankrupt and he replied it was better to be funded as a waiter at the Hilton Hotel than a hard up student with no money and credit card debt!
The Handbag Book was commissioned in Ireland and covers a place in time stretching from that geographical point to Eastern Europe and focuses on Austria, Prague, and other less well known cities such as Brno in Czech Republic.
The poems are a handful of interesting anecdotal inscriptions and I call your attention to
Casablanca,
well, you might add that certainly is not Europe and you would be correct ... I touched down in Casablanca many years ago when I was on Safari thus the poem ... "everybody has a turn" "In Casablanca Morocco to shed a few pounds" and literally that is what I have been doing recently, making headway with weight loss. Considering the crisis in Africa and other parts of the rich world obesity is something we must fight against.
"Schmuchendes" will take you to the point of no return if it were not for the lines as follows ...
"How many roads to Babylon" ""Where will it all end" "In the graveyard near Budapest"
the sense here of eternity and the end of life due to the constant threat of war and destruction forced an issue in this poem and the concluding poem
"Rights" must stimulate the reader to make a decision in favour of Human Rights and the rights of the individual to free choice in life or in the case of the poet in death ...
"Rights sway the majority" in life as in death we will have rights to be, to see, to say, to do and to be true!
All the best to you ... excellent stuff ... keep on reading ...
