This novel is all about demystifying the myths about sexthrough a journey of self discovery taken by the novel's dramatic protagonist Maria. She is the archetypal woman who has gone through the trysts of love, betrayal and confusion in her relationships. Exasperated by the confines of society and betrayed by the lovers in her life she decides to tread the unfamiliar path and explore the world through the language of sex . In her journey from a girl to that of a woman she realizes the various social dictums associated with one's own body. How a body though one's own is always governed by what others think of it.
She tries to break those familiar dictats of society and live her life by her book. In the process she clears her own troubled associations with love and men. She breaks free from the "acceptable" and her learningslean towardsthe philosophical.
The book tosses between the personal life of Maria and the larger life she experiences. It gives insight into the mind of girl who has suddenly grown up spiritually through her carnal experiences. Her description of something as organic and biological as a woman's clittoris " itsa window to the outside world " gives away of her association with life and sex. From a girl who wanted to attain fame and riches, her life takes a u-turn when she is solicited by those looking for a one night stand of absolute fantasy. Her dialogues with various men over various continents builds her vocabulary of pleasure. The mere transaction of her body and currency is a deal she strikes to travel Europe. She constantly tries to seperate the metaphysics of human emotions from her sexual experiences so that she can develop a methodological wisdom of her own body and her own desires. When she is introduced to a strong character in the novel first as a solicitor and then as her lover she is asked to choose by fate between love and desire.The novel paints a rivetting picture of a prostitute's desire to travel, to seek knowledge and finally find her inner self.
