Society to savagery , bliss to brutality, boys to beasts. This is the essence of Lord of the Flies. The story is about a group of young boys who are stranded on a corral island. As time passes their humanity and mortality diminish. Until all but a few who are lead by our dominant character Ralph, become merciless killers. It begins with a fair hair Boy named Ralph coming to on a deserted island. As he surveys the area he finds another boy. An overweight asthmatic boy with very poor vision known only as Piggy. Ralph and Piggy continued their search along the island?s beach into they find a sea shell. Ralph blows into this shell and creates a trumpet like noise. The sound draws the other stranded boys to Ralph. Perhaps of his since of civility or perhaps of his ability to make load noise come out of the shell Ralph is elected leader. Life moves forward on the island. Ralph creates rules. He becomes obsessed with keep a fire alive on top of the mountain in hopes it will be seen by passing ships. Another boy called Jack is held as head of the hunters. Unlike Ralph, Jack his no desire for rules, only the hunt. Conflicts begin to arise between Jack and Ralph. This combined with the fear that there is some malevolent force on the island brings forth the darker aspects of Lord of the Flies. The term lord of the Flies refers to the Hebrew devil Beelzebub. In the story this term is used to describe the severed head of ?the beast? a great wild bore who is slain by the boy hunters. The sight of this decapitated creature pushes the boy Simon into madness. Then he too is slain. Killed in a sickening war dance performed by the sinister savages who not so long ago were no more than young men. The group breaks downs. Ralph, Piggy, and twins named Eric and Sam try to hold on to the echo of what is civilized. They are cast out from the group but attempt to hold onto what is right. They also attempt to keep the fire alight in fleeing hopes of rescue. The rest of the boys become savage warriors lead by Jack. They embrace the most primal of human instincts, paint their faces, and rule by bullying and brutality. The hunters raid the camp of the civilized boys, steal their fire as well as Piggy?s broken glasses. Ralph and the other boys seek Jack and the hunters in order to right this wrong, get the fire and the glasses back. The confutation leads to more bloodshed. The sea shell shatters as well as Piggy?s skull. Ralph is wounded and separated from the twins. He flees into the wilderness. Armed with the spike the bores head was driven upon he resurfaces hours later only to find the twins have been forced to join the hunters. He confronts them finding out that he is to be the next hunt. Ralph tells the twins he?s planned hiding spot and is off to lurch within tall grass and thick bushes. The information is beaten out of the twins and the hunters circle Ralph?s location. Ralph has the upper hand. The hunters can not enter the thicket without being injured with Ralph?s spear. Alas, the find a way around this by rolling boulders off the cliff above and setting the thicket to blaze. Ralph escapes the fire and runs into the island?s jungle. The hunters follow. There Ralph is the prey. His only hope for survival is a combination of fighting and hiding. He does so wounding serial hunters, hiding in a deeper darker thicket and possibly killing Jack?s right hand man, a boy named Roger. In the mends of this great chase Ralph comes to the horrible conclusion that the fire the hunters used to flush him out has spread and set the entire island to flame. Ralph runs about this inferno all the while being stalked by the hunters. Finally he immerses on the beach to find a Naval Officer staring him down. The smoke created by the roasting island has caught the attention of adults. Everyone of the boys surrender to tears. The know what they have done. They know what they have become. They are rescued and both the dream and the nightmare are over. Yes, this truly isthe essences of Lord of the Flies.
