Tess Of The D'urbervilles
(Thomas Hardy)
In Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy tells of the plight of peasant maiden Tess Durbeyfield, whom in the sub-title of the novel Hardy dubs ?A Pure Woman?. This subtitle is important to note, because in spite of every negative fate that befalls Tess, Hardy always maintains her role as a victim of fate, which works it?s suffering through the injustice of the Victorian mores, the crimes and dogmatism of man, and the changing rural landscape at the hand of the industrial revolution. In the first pages of the novel the poverty stricken Durbeyfield family learns of their descent from the noble Norman lineage of d?Urberville, which sends Tess on a journey that the family hopes will restore it?s former greatness. Tess is sent to the estate of the Stokes-d?Urbervilles where she catches the eye of Alec d?Urberville, the son of the mistress of the estate. She is offered a position at the estate in the fowl-farm from which she accepts in hopes of earning money to help her family. While working at the farm she endures the constant attention of Alec who rapes Tess after his former attempts to win her affection fail. A fallen woman, Tess is forced to endure many heartbreaks and hardships as she tries to make the best out of an unkind existence. The most painful being the loss of her true love, Angel Clare, who although caries a similar past cannot see past Tess?. Although ultimately tragic, the novel has a bittersweet climax, which sees Tess finally reaching true happiness, if only for a brief period moment. In spite of the tragic nature of the story, Hardy, using his elegant lilt and poetic descriptions that paint vivid pictures of the English landscape and an exquisite picture of a heroine who burns bright against her bleak backdrop, create a story of touching beauty that can be enjoyed by anyone.
