Jeanne is happy with her father to rediscover the Castle of her childhood. She spends her first night, at the window of her room, dreaming of the light clear moon. A life of no worries and of complete liberty begins. Jeanne spends her days reading, dreaming and enjoying nature. One night, a fisherman working for lebaron offers Jeanne and Julien to walk by the sea to Etretat. For the first time, Jeanne and the Lord exchange intimate words. At night, Jeanne thinks again about this day and about the sensations which are new and which she had with the Lord. She dreams of the young man. Jeanne and the Lord Lamare are the groom and the best maid. Jeanne, is very moved, takes away her hand. : The father of Jeanne announces that the Lord has asked her in marriage. The night of their wedding Jeanne is upset. Jeanne, herself, thinks lonely, shoked and unhappy. During one of her walks in the mountain, charmed by the hot climitate of the mediterranean sea, Jeanne discovers love discovers pleasure, Jeanne asks Julien money that her mothe has given to her. Jeanne is upset by this attitude which is mean and worries her. Jeanne and Julien live now alone with People. Jeanne tries to confide in them because they think she has to much imagination. The Pastor Picot tries to comfort her and to reconcile her with her husband. One afternoon Julien and Jeanne receive the visite of Fourvile, a local nobel family. Jeanne sympatizes with the young woman. Deceived by her wedding, Jeanne loves with affection her son only and is deeply in love with him. In exchange of a dowry of 20.000 F, a well organized peasant, Desire Lecoq, accepts to marry Rosalie and to take in exchange her child. The parents of Jeanne come to spend some time at Peuples. Afraid of her father will find this letter which puts her in trouble, Jeanne burns her letters. Jeanne is very scared about loosing her son and find herself lonely. In vain, another day, M. de Fourville arrives at Peuples, very troubled, and asks for his wife. Gilberte and Julien are killed. Paul, his only source of comfort, grows, loved and cherished by everybody. Jeanne finds herself lonely. Jeanne has pardonned Rosalie. Ruined, Jeanne is forced to sell her castle at Peuples. Jeanne tries in vain to receive her son. The response of her son hurts her. He announces her his wedding with a creature that Jeanne has never known. In vain, Jeanne stays in her solitude and thinks over and over again and in vain this old souvenirs. Jeanne is extremely happy. She sees again the castle of her childhood and recalls with pleasure her souvenirs which come back to her. Rosalie comes to meet her and takes her back to Jeanne.
