The post at Christmas was a few days late so I quickly picked up my members' collection and
thumbed through the Poetry Review.
There is a great assortment of poetic styles and contrasting views ... I was drawn by ...Eavn Boland
and his poem ...
How it was once in our country
The whole concept of "Country" is so well crafted that the idea of Ireland and the colour
blue is a new application as one always thinks of Ireland as "the Emerald Isle" and
the asociations are usually "green" rather than blue. Boland mentions the notion
of country as "borderless" therein we have a finger pointed at the political debate,
since Ireland is split by a border and has been that way now for nearly one
hundred years ... the South is known as The Republic or Ireland and the
North or Six Counties is known as Northern Ireland/United Kingdom of
Great Britain. And although geographically glued to Ireland its political
links are with Downing Street, in London, UK.
Not for nothing do the fairy people occupy a prestigious place in poetry and this next
poem is "Goblins" by Julia Casterton. the narrative leads us to the hospital bed, and
the patient is lying dying from "the antics of last night's parade" ... the notion of
suicide is mooted ... and the last line ..."to another foolish eater, suicide or sister"
creates the pattern of invisible forces I suppose like goblins who poison your tea
or indeed your food. Cannot be avoided as they are under your bed, behind your
chair or hiding in your wardrobe!
Finally, the article ending this Poetry Review, "Company of Loners" strikes a note
close to home..with the Workshop Gen Poets. For us the Workshop Girls and
Boys Poets is a reality, and a word in your ear, I took Poetry class at University
meaning I taught Poetry Class ... and all my students passed ... great news
for us as Lecturers in English Poetry ... but that was in 2004 a long time ago,
full time teaching in the UK what else.
