Freedom In Exile-the Autobiography Of The Dalai Lama

The story comes straight out of the Prophet's mouth-the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. Tibet is still somewhat of a forbidden land-the land of mystery, the land of spirits, the land of Lamas, the land of great yogis, who meditate on sub-zero frozen peaks with hardly any thing on their body....The mystery can be really fascinating to a westerner, who may be shocked to know that Tibet is no Atlantis of an imaginary past but a living and thriving nation, which till few decades ago was administered by the monks and the major government decisions were taken by the ruling or the presiding spirit. The chief monk, or the Dalai Lama was at the head of the government assisted by a hierarchy of Lamas. The post of Dalai Lama according to the belief goes to the same soul inhabiting different physical bodies life after life. Reincarnation is a strongly held and proven fact in Tibet.
Everything changed for the worst in late 1950s. Communist China invaded the land of peaceful and gentle lamas, first invading their culture and religion followed by large scale massacres and blood bath. The impending doom was predicted by the presiding spirit and the Dalai Lama was asked to seek shelter in the southward direction. The Dalai Lama was lucky to escape the onslaught along with several other monks, who came to India in 1959. Indian government under Nehru offered them whatever little it could offer. Indian conditions were harsh-heat and dust included.A large number of other Tibetans migrated to India and the other nations in Europe and elsewhere. Under the great odds, the Tibetans began organising their shattered life in distant lands. They rebuilt their culture and life. They founded an economy of their own to survive. The Dalai Lama heads the govt. in exile from Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. Freedom still seems distant to this hardy lot, but apopulation numbering not many millions is an example of all that can be the best in human spirit and humanity.
The story has been told poignantly with interesting, amazing and shocking anecdotes.
