The Alchemist
(Paulo Koalo)

Publicidade
Alchemist is one of the most enchanting books written by Paulo and has inspired millions of delighted readers around the world. The novel tells the tale of Santiago, a boy who has a dream and the courage to follow it. After listening to the signs the boy ventures in his personal, Ulysses-like journey of exploration and self-discovery, symbolically searching for a hidden treasure located near the pyramids in Egypt. However, by the end of the novel, he discovers that was the journey itself, and the wisdom he acquired during the same. This book instigates a unique and fresh kind of optimism in life as it states thateverything is possible as long as one really wants it to happen. It inspires & encourages one to aim high and strive hard to achieve that goal. It?s a novel that combines an atmosphere of Medieval mysticism combined with the song of the desert. It shakes its readers hard and forces them to think deep, by the narration of a simple story. It motivates not to avoid or ignore our destinies, and urges to follow our dreams, so that we are able to understand the ultimate purpose of our creation and attain the real meaning of happiness and fulfillment. It defines love in a beautiful way by stating it as an expression of togetherness tied with a bond that allows the beloved to realize and accomplish one?s cherished dreams of life. As stated by Paulo that when you really want something to happen, the whole universe conspires so that your wish comes true, actually stands true. As once you have taken a decision and start pursuing your dreams, the magical path towards the fulfillment of ?it? gets created automatically. The philosophy encouraged by Alchemist is some what similar to the one stated by Saint-Exupéry's in the book ?The Little Prince? which is a children's book. Even this book is about a boy, the Prince, who leaves his home in search of greater things, learning valuable lessons about life and love on the way and much of The Little Prince also takes place in a desert. Also, the spiritual journey of Santiago runs parallel to that of Siddhartha's in Herman Hesse's Siddhartha and that of seagull in Richard Bach?s Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Just like Siddhartha on his journey, Santiago has to become a business man; his ideas succeed in making him wealthy, but he is apart from the business of business. The Alchemist is similar to the boatman in Siddhartha, who, after transporting Siddhartha across the river, sends him on his way to follow his destiny, knowing he will return. Though their love stories develop and end differently; but both are spiral stories with the same places being visited more than once. In Jonathan Livingston Seagull too, seagull is learning about life and flight, and a talks about self-perfection and self-sacrifice. He pushes himself, learning everything he can about flying, until finally his unwillingness to conform results in his expulsion from his clan. An outcast, he continues to learn, becoming increasingly pleased with his abilities as he leads an idyllic life. So on the whole, Alchemist is an interesting tale that boosts one?s confidence and teaches one that the best way to learn is through action.
