April 1865: The Month That Saved America
(Jay Winik)
The book details a series of events taking place in and around April 1865 which shaped the outcome of the Civil War as well as the reconciliation and set the stage for reunification of the Union and the Confederacy following the war. Vinik is a superb story teller and weaves a rich tapestry of the events in historyas well asbackground on significant military and political figures.Theauthor points out a series of critical decisions taken by men on both sides of the conflict which prevented further hostilities and guerilla warfareas theCivil War was ending and allowed the United States of America to become what it is today. A fascinating and fact filled portrayal of many eventsand circumstances that are not generally covered in any depth in history class.A great read. A nice civics lesson and filled with rich details. Highly recommended.
