In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, a little girl grows up and learns all about the different types of people in the world during a time of segregation in the 1930?s.Harper Lee makes you feel like your right in the middle of the story. Throughout the story you find yourself time and again getting into trouble with Jem, Scout, and Dill. As Scout narrates the story, she tries not to be afraid as her brother, Jem, and their friend, Dill, try time and again to get Boo Radley out of the house or get a look at him. Jem first described him as "There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time."Atticus, Scout?s father, was asked to defend an African American that was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. His name was Tom Robinson and since he was a black man in a racist town, the odds of winning didn?t look good and losing usually lead to lynching. Everyone goes through struggles in the book, including Boo and Calpurnia. An example of these struggles are the Cuttingham's. The Cuttingham's are farmers and after the stock market crash, the Cuttingham's were in trouble. Fortunately, they borrowed money from Atticus and payed him back by leaving food on his porch and other things. Everyone at the end of the book seems a little bit older and I don?t mean by age. They grow older by acting mature, being more courageous, standing up for what they believe in, not fighting, and even biting their tongues. In conclusion, this is one of the best books I?ve ever read. I give it 4 stars out of 5. Not only was it good reading, but it also showed the difficulties of some lives during the 1930?s, not just the African Americans.
